Hector Velasquez is a student at Manhattan's Hunter College, where he's majoring in journalism. He's also an intern at "The Gay Old Times," a gay newspaper.

As a teenager, Hector was living on the streets of Manhattan after being told to leave home by his father, who didn't understand the boy's effeminate nature. After a short time, Hector made his way to the youth center where Joey's sister works. Sister Gina introduced Hector to Joey and his friends, and the teenager soon had a new extended family. When Joey's partner Lou retired, he and his wife became Hector's foster parents. Hector regularly checked in with Joey's friend Phil, who was the social worker assigned to his case.

He spent much of the rest of his high school years feeling awkward and out of place, but still managed to date a couple of the athletes at his school. After starting college in 2004, Hector began working out, and soon found himself with a new body and a renewed sense of confidence.

Hector's courage, his sense of wonderment, and his ability to see humor in adversity continue to make him many fast friends.
