Lou Gordon retired in December 2001, after thirty years on the New
York City Police Department. For the last 9 years of his service, he
was Joey's partner,
an experience that taught him more about gay life and relationships
than he bargained for. He and his wife, Berta, consider Joey and Eric
like sons, however, and often invite them over for one of Berta's excellent
home-cooked meals.
Lou's unique understanding of gay men - and Berta's culinary skills
- have come in handy since they decided to become foster parents to
homeless gay teen Hector.
In no time at all, the retired couple came to love the boy as their
own.
Though he is often taken as gruff and short-tempered, Lou has a much
softer side. He is equally happy watching sports on TV or quietly listening
to his old jazz records; in fact, it was he who taught Joey an appreciation
for that music.
